Iowa State Auditor Rob Sand's office announced the 2026 winners of its Public Innovations and Efficiencies program, including Essex as the Best Performing 1A School District. The PIE program was launched in 2019 and is designed to promote fiscal responsibility and encourage collaboration among communities. Melissa Chambers is the school business officer with Essex Schools and told KMA News that we are appreciative of the recognition from the State Auditor's Office.
"I think all schools and government entities are in a position to try and be fiscally responsible and save taxpayers money when they can," said Chambers. "But, the recognition from Auditor Sand and his visit, as well as the pie, was very much appreciated." As quoted in the KMA article.
